JFK X Removed 11-20-13

For years, an X in the center lane of Elm Street in Dealey Plaza marked the spot where President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot 50 years ago. It was placed there by conspiracy theorist Robert Gordon to mark an approximation of where it was thought Lee Harvey Oswald aimed his sights.

The Dallas Observer reports that city crews removed the X yesterday during street work to smooth out the asphalt on Elm Street. The work is part of the preparations for the 50th anniversary ceremony set for Friday.

We’re pretty split down the middle on the X’s removal. On one hand, Tony is glad to see the X gone as he thought it in poor taste. Julie actually liked the X; she thought it a profound symbol of the place where our country was forever changed.

Tony hopes that it doesn’t come back. If it does, he thinks that it shouldn’t be an X. He would rather have a medallion, a plaque, or something less tacky than a plain white X. Julie and John think the X represents the history of the conspiracy theorists that worked to figure out the location.
