Lite’s Movie Review Room

Wreck It Ralph

There are multiple new movies out this weekend, so first let’s take a look at Disney’s “Wreck It Ralph,” starring John C. Reilly as a video game bad-guy who wants to turn over a new leaf.

“Wreck It Ralph” does a couple of things really well, like it’s intricate video game worlds with colorful characters & back stories. John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch also provide some impressive voice-work. Watch for fun cameos from classic video game characters, like Frogger and Qbert, but this might be part of the problem. “Wreck it Ralph” is a movie for kids but the old video game references & jokes won’t resonate with them. My kids didn’t think it was very funny and they had several questions about computer code and glitches after the movie. Questions I’m not smart enough to answer, sadly. I loved “Wreck it Ralph” and am giving it a B, but my kids were NOT as impressed.

The Sessions

Also out is “The Sessions,” the true story of a paralyzed man who wants to lose his virginity.

John Hawkes plays Mark O’Brien, a poet and journalist paralyzed from the neck down due to polio. O’Brien decides he wants to KNOW a woman in the biblical sense so he seeks out a sexual surrogate, played by Helen Hunt. O’Brien is a devout Catholic & wants God’s blessing, so he also talks to William H. Macy, who plays the World’s Coolest Priest. Director Ben Lewin treats this story with such a gentle, loving hand, the movie virtually GLOWS with sentiment and that’s why “The Sessions” is getting an A+ from me. In fact, this might be the first time a movie about getting lucky goes to the Oscars.
