Getting yelled at by friends and family for sitting on the couch and watching too much TV lately? Well just pop in a horror film, and you can tell them your burning calories.
The New York Daily News is reporting that watching horror movies can actually burn calories.
The study was commissioned by the website LOVEFiLM.com, and researchers in the UK had people watch a variety of horror films while they took measurements, including heart rate, oxygen intake, carbon dioxide output and calories burned.
“Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies,” cell metabolism specialist Richard Mackenzie said.
He added, “As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline. It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.”
Here is the list of the top ten calorie burning horror films, according to the study:
- The Shining – 184 calories
- Jaws – 161 calories
- The Exorcist – 158 calories
- Alien – 152 calories
- Saw – 133 calories
- A Nightmare On Elm Street – 118 calories
- Paranormal Activity – 111 calories
- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre – 107 calories
- The Blair Witch Project – 105 calories
- [Rec] – 101 Calories
If you decide to go for a movie marathon that would be 1330 calories burned.
