Another weekend is upon us and that means we need to find out what entertaining films will be hitting theaters.
This week a trip to mars, a frightening situation at the lake house, and Eddie Murphy can’t speak. Our Queen of the Silver Screen, Julie Fisk, headed out to see John Carter, she’s also bringing some tips on seeing The Hunger Games opening weekend . We’ll let the member of the DFW Film Critics Association take control of this one:
John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War vet who is mysteriously transported to Mars during a battle to control the planet.
I don’t like it when people compare movies to the original Star Wars because it sets us up for disappointment, but that’s the movie that kept popping into my head while watching John Carter. With its desert landscape, crazy aliens and a princess who needs help saving her planet, the comparisons are obvious. The OTHER movie that kept popping into my head while watching John Carter though, was 1980s “Flash Gordon” with its overblown Martian back drops and skimpy outfits. Oh yeah, Taylor Kitsch pretty much NEVER has on a shirt. Not that I’m complaining. I LOVED him in “Friday Night Lights” and he proves himself a capable leading man in “John Carter.”
Honestly, I had no real desire to see this movie and the trailers gave us little to be excited about, but I REALLY enjoyed “John Carter.” It’s convoluted and the cheese factor is high but it tells a great story and wraps it all up with a fantastic ending so I’m giving John Carter a B. Fans of the book series will enjoy it, especially young boys if they can get over the yucky love story.
Now let’s take a second to talk about The Hunger Games. It isn’t opening until March 23rd but if you want to see this movie opening weekend you need to buy your tickets now. Its 2 weeks away, but midnight screenings of The Hunger Games are already selling out. They are expecting an unprecedented turn-out for this movie so if you want to avoid frustration and long lines opening weekend and probably the following week, get those tickets now. You can do that at thehungergamesmovie.com.Silent House

A Thousand Words
Eddie Murphy is Jack McCall, a fast-talking literary agent, who can close any deal, any time, any way. He has set his sights on New Age guru Dr. Sinja (Cliff Curtis) for his own selfish purposes. But Dr. Sinja is on to him, and Jack’s life comes unglued after a magical Bodhi tree mysteriously appears in his backyard.
With every word Jack speaks, a leaf falls from the tree and he realizes that when the last leaf falls, both he and the tree are toast. Words have never failed Jack McCall, but now he’s got to stop talking and conjure up some outrageous ways to communicate or he’s a goner.
