The Harry Potter Playlist

142 The Harry Potter PlaylistIt’s the end, Harry Potter friends. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” opens in theaters Friday, thus concluding a solid decade of serial movie-making. If “Part 1” was the picaresque, “Part 2” is the war movie. It’s the Battle of Hogwarts. Good versus Evil. And the end of the story, until we crack the books again.

Until then, some songs for the Chosen One and his friends.

“The Seeker” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Who[/lastfm]

What else would you play for a boy wizard who plays Seeker on his house Quidditch team? (And spends his teen years seeking the means to defeat evil?)

“O Children” — [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds[/lastfm]
Fully-headed Nick Cave never appeared in the books, but Harry and Hermione danced to this song in “Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” On the run from Voldemort, deserted by Ron, and in desperate need of one good moment. This was the soundtrack.

“Do The Hippogriff” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Weird Sisters[/lastfm]

That’s Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pulp[/lastfm], and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Radiohead[/lastfm] rocking Hogwarts during the Yule Ball in “HP and the Goblet of Fire.” Why does Professor Flitwick call them the band that needs no introduction? Trademark dispute with a Muggle band.

“The W.A.N.D.” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Flaming Lips[/lastfm]

The Battle of Hogwarts is no pillow fight. But there are a lot of wands.

“Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Counting Crows[/lastfm]

We can only imagine there was once a moment where Lily Potter cradled a baby in her arms and looking down at his clear forehead, sang him to sleep.

“The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Spoon[/lastfm]
There is weird convergence between the American band and the very English story. I hear “The Underdog” and think of Neville Longbottom finishing Nagini. “Mathematical Mind” reminds me of Hermione Granger. “The Beast and Dragon, Adored” could be Voldemort addressing his Death Eaters. But this one, it’s Severus Snape: “He steals the whole show in his last dying scene/No one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine.” I mean, not in drag like the video, but as a double agent. Bring it on, Alan Rickman.

“Lady Writer” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dire Straits[/lastfm]

A little something for Harry’s real mum, Jo Rowling.

“Magic Man” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Heart[/lastfm]

“He’s a magic man….oh….he’s got the magic hands.” Are we still talking about wizardry?

“Magic” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Cars[/lastfm]

Here’s the rocker Harry could sing to that fetching redhead, Ginny Weasley. “Oh oh, it’s magic when I’m with you.”

“My Baby Must Be A Magician” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Marvelettes[/lastfm]

Early Motown tribute to someone with skills beyond ordinary prestidigitation. “Now listen, no rabbits in his hand. No pigeons up his sleeve.” An owl, maybe.

“Rhiannon” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Fleetwood Mac[/lastfm]
The tale of a Welsh witch. Did the Grey Lady come from Wales?

“Season of the Witch” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Donovan[/lastfm]

Do remember when little Hermione was just as cute as a button? Now she’s veering into more dangerous territory. She even looks good in a pixie haircut. It’s Emma’s season. It’s Emma’s witchy world. We’re just living in it.

“I Put A Spell On You” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nina Simone[/lastfm]
I like this version, because Nina Simone works strange magic.

“When The Spell Is Broken” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Richard Thompson[/lastfm]

Keep that patronus charm burning brightly and you’ll keep the dementors away.

“Alone Again Or” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Love[/lastfm]
Harry Potter spends his school years learning that you can’t get through life alone. You need your friends. And Love is the most powerful thing, more powerful than death.

At a Brehmer family reunion some years ago we passed around copies of The Deathly Hallows. Whenever someone got to a certain point in the book, they would stop moving, stop eating, stop drinking and we’d say, “they’ve reached the battle for Hogwarts. They’ll rejoin us later.” Can’t wait for Friday.
