As huge lovers of the romantic and dramatic vampire genre, we were super excited to get our hands on pictures from the set of the popular movie series, Twilight.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1) is the first half of the fourth and final installment of this crowd-pleasing cinematic spectacle of vampires, werewolves, blood-lust, and teenagers in love. While we love vampire movies, much of the music that accompanies such films isn’t just goth and moody–it’s downright cacophonous.

So we made it our mission to find Ten Mellow Songs About Vampires & Blood and we think we succeeded. Check out these ten songs from artists like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Norah Jones[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tori Amos[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Simon[/lastfm] that delve into the darkside of a fairytale world without losing the pretty, sparkly touches that make vampires so alluring.

10. “Young Blood”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Norah Jones[/lastfm]

Beautiful, jazzy crooner Norah Jones doesn’t seem like she would sink her teeth into the sanguine aspirations of the vampire, but she does just that in her song “Young Blood.”

A story about dangerously passionate, suffocating young love that would be a perfect musical interlude in any of the Twilight series movies, especially with lyrics like this:

Kissed my neck with a crooked, cracked fang/You always hoped one day you’d be mine

9. “Vampire Blues”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm]

Sort of like the 12-bar blues version of almost any goth song about vampires, Neil Young puts his usual guitar-driven backdoor blues touches on an obviously metaphorical song about craving someone so bad, they feel like a vampire:

I’m a vampire, babe/suckin’ blood from the earth/I’m a vampire, baby/suckin’ blood from the earth/Well, I’m a vampire, babe/sell you twenty barrels worth.

8. “Blood Roses”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tori Amos[/lastfm]

Tori Amos is renowned for writing songs about women that have been used and abused by men. “Blood Roses” is of the same vein, except it alludes to the vampiric quality of a man who would suck the life out of you.

The vampire metaphor is furthered by Amos making mention of what is easily the literary vampire capital of the world–New Orleans:

The Belle of New Orleans tried to show me/Once how to tango/Wrapped around you feet/Wrapped around like good little roses

7. “Vampires Will Never Hurt You”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]My Chemical Romance[/lastfm]

The least mellow song of the bunch, My Chemical Romance is an extremely popular mainstream band that knows how the constant struggles of being a musician can suck you dry, fearful that they will be “struck down, before our prime/before you got off the floor/can you stake my heart?/can you stake my heart?”

6. “Crying Blood”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]V.V. Brown[/lastfm]

British soul chanteuse with the big band slant, V.V. Brown, might not sound like it in her song, but she is so heartbroken that she is “crying blood”:

I’m crying tears from my eyes that I can’t deny/And I am falling like a comet from the broken sky.

When’s the last time you saw someone cry blood? Only vampires cry blood! And her name V.V. looks like fangs! We are onto you Brown.

5. “My Vampire Heart”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tom McRae[/lastfm]

Underrated singer-songwriter, Tom McRae, is obviously a tortured man. From his lyrics in “My Vampire Heart,” being in love has not only left him with bruises, but ended in bloodshed:

Darling I’m lost/Adrift in the dark/I’m clutching your words/To my vampire heart once more/So let in the light/Turn me to dust/If it don’t end in Bloodshed dear/It’s probably not love

4. “Blood is Blood”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nerina Pallot[/lastfm]

In Nerina Pallot’s song, “Blood is Blood,” Pallot sings that bloodletting–whether metaphorical or literal–is an inevitable part of nature that even humans enjoy and detest as much as those pallid bloodsuckers:

If blood is blood, then blood will flow/That’s all it does, that’s all it knows/But i’ve one question, I want something/I want more/So flesh is flesh, an urgent fire/It drags you down, this cheap desire

3. “Damn These Vampires”[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]-The Mountain Goats[/lastfm]

Indie folk band, The Mountain Goats, are tormented by vampires, but are also themselves vampires. Is this more symbolism about the constant, painful give and take of life and love? We think so!

Feast like pagans /Never get enough/Sleep like dead men/Wake up like dead men/And when the sun comes/Try not to hate the light/Someday we’ll try/To walk upright

2. “Blood and Fire”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Indigo Girls[/lastfm]

Sometimes the most melancholy songs are the most beautiful, as is the case for Indigo Girl’s “Blood and Fire.” Another song about the painful agony of love that alludes to bloodshed being the only option for expression:

I have spent nights with matches and knives/Leaning over ledges, only two flights up/Cutting my heart, burning my soul/Nothing left to hold/Nothing left but, blood and fire

As Bella knows, being in love with a vampire can be pretty…morbid.

1. “The Vampires”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Simon[/lastfm]

Actually, this is probably a song about a gang, but this tropical-tinged vampire ditty from Paul Simon (complete with some sassy NSFW language, so be careful), is our favorite vampire song we’ve heard by far. Hooligan vampire kids set to a Simon-esque rhythm? Can you say perfect movie soundtrack song?

Come here, I want to show/you something/This is the cave of The Vampires/Count Dracula’s castle/The very sight could turn a white man grey/Made in the shade, use my umbrella/Black like the night we fly in/That blade is all you need to keep the dogs away/So, you want to be a vampire, man! That’s good/We always looking for young blood in the neighborhood now
